The 4+1 Health Pillars in the Workplace: a stable balance…in perpetual motion

4+1 Health Pillars at Work

What are the 4 essential pillars for our survival, which allow us to stand up, even when one of them falters? I often use the analogy of a 4-legged stool: if one of the legs wobbles, the stool is still standing, but when 2 out of 4 legs are affected, we lose our balance. Unless you have a good balancing act of course. This principle is the same within an organisation: to maintain or even improve your performance, these 4 pillars are essential and must be an integral part of your health strategy.

All these pillars must be there, even if they don’t have to be all the same size. It will be up to you to find the right distribution between each of them. And recently a 5th pillar (hence the 4 + 1) was added to the stool, you will understand why. You can learn more about each of those 4+1 pillars by simply clicking on each of the links below.

So these 4 + 1 pillars of health are:

  1. Mental health

  2. Physical health

  3. Emotional health

  4. Social health

With the new kid on the block emerging from Anglo-Saxon countries, and which will probably be soon added into corporate health strategy from most of Continental European countries, namely:

  1. Financial health

These 4 + 1 pillars are the basis of your health and well-being strategy. After you have identified – thanks to your Health Risk Assessment/HRA – your main risks, these pillars as well as their respective articulation and connection will allow you to build a health strategy worthy of the name.
